LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Five North Oldham Middle School students received a huge surprise on Tuesday — they won a national contest and a trip to New York City.

The seventh grade students were part of two separate groups that created a performance piece based on a historical event for a national contest. Both groups were named National Outstanding Performance winners in the national contest through The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

"It feels pretty good," said Rosalie Yantis. "We already had a run at this and didn't make the second callbacks. So it's really awesome for us to be able to make it to New York."

The students were told Tuesday morning that they'd be getting an all-expenses paid trip to New York City in May to see "Hamilton" on Broadway and explore the city.

"I just feel like this is a really big accomplishment because I've never really done anything this big before," Emily Schardein said.

"I was sitting in my math class, really bored, and then we got called to the auditorium, and we got the news. I was so shocked," said Harper Ford.

"Last year, when we lost, it was really devastating," Logan Brodsky said. "So I was really happy that we won this year."

The fifth student wasn't at school on Tuesday to speak about the surprise.

More than 250 teams from middle and high schools across the nation submitted entries, and only 10 teams were chosen, including the two teams from NOMS.
