LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Outgoing Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio will take over as president of Ivy Tech Community College, when he steps down from the district this summer.

Last September, Pollio announced he would be stepping down as superintendent July 1 this year after nearly three decades with Kentucky's largest school district. He was named superintendent in 2017.

According to a news release from the college Wednesday afternoon, Pollio was elected by the Ivy Tech Community College State Board of Trustees as the college's 10th president, starting July 1, after a national search.

Ivy Tech is Indiana's statewide community college system. Pollio is succeeding Dr. Sue Ellspermann, who is retiring in June after nearly a decade, Ivy Tech said. She assumed the role in 2016, after serving as the 50th lieutenant governor of Indiana.

“Marty Pollio is a results-driven, dynamic leader with immense heart and passion for students,” Andrew Wilson, chairman of the Ivy Tech State Board of Trustees and co-chair of the Presidential Search Committee, said in a news release. “We are confident he will build on the innovation and growth we’ve experienced in the last decade and bolster our ability to help more Hoosiers achieve their academic and career goals.”

As president, Pollio will serve as the "chief executive officer of Indiana's largest postsecondary institution," serving more than 200,000 students at its 19 campuses across Indiana and online. The college said Pollio will also continue Ivy Tech's "focus on delivering high-quality, innovative, and affordable education and training aligned to the needs of Indiana's workforce and economy."

"Ivy Tech is doing great things in Indiana," Pollio said in Wednesday's news release. "I'm honored to be joining such a strong institution, and I'm ready to continue building more value for students and communities across the state."

The college system said Pollio "rose to the top for his passion for students and experiencing creating results around workforce readiness and academic excellence."

Ahead of Pollio's retirement, JCPS is moving forward in its search for his replacement.

During its meeting Tuesday evening, the Jefferson County Board of Education—along with the Superintendent Screening Committee—announced they would be moving forward in the search by interviewing six candidates for the position of the next superintendent of JCPS.

JCPS formed the Superintendent Search Advisory Committee to guide Hazard Young Attea Associates, a search firm asked to help hire Pollio's replacement.
