LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The Jefferson County Board of Education will discuss overcrowding at Echo Trail Middle School during its meeting next Tuesday.
Jefferson County Public Schools wants to redraw the boundary lines for the school in an effort to ease overcrowding.
Echo Trail opened just three years ago to relieve overcrowding, but JCPS said faster growth than projected, combined with more families choosing their reside school after bus cuts, has left the school struggling.
The district's projections show the middle school in east Louisville will be a third over capacity next school year if nothing is done.
JCPS wants to move students living north of Interstate 64 and west of Valhalla Golf Club to Crosby Middle School at the beginning of next school year. It's eight miles away, and only three-quarters full.
Current Echo Trail students could stay, but fifth graders face a tough transition as the path to middle school now splits them from their friends.
The plans have fired up some parents, with some calling it "a joke" and "incompetence."
"It's breaking my heart because I don't have faith in the system. And now we're talking about switching our kids to private, and I never would have ever done that," said one parent.
The board meeting starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18.
