LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jefferson County Public Schools will be closed again Friday due to the winter storm expected to bring more snow to the area.

The school district in Louisville was scheduled to return from a two-week winter break Monday, but a winter storm moved through the area on Sunday and Monday. JCPS announced Sunday evening that class would be canceled Monday. Then on Monday, the school district announced the cancellation of class for Tuesday and Wednesday.

In a statement Wednesday evening, Carolyn Callahan, the district's chief communications officer, said icy roads and extreme cold temperatures led to Thursday's closure. Athletic events and extracurricular activities were also canceled.

And then Thursday afternoon, the district called out for the final day of the week. It's a traditional snow day but employees will telecommute, the district said.

All extracurricular activities Friday are also canceled.

Callahan told WDRB it did not opt for NTI, or virtual learning, for two reasons: one, because several students did not have access to devices coming off of break, and two, for many students, it marks a new semester and didn't feel students starting new classes would be beneficial.

On Tuesday, Callahan said the condition of side streets is a factor in the decision to return to school. The school district has around 40,000 bus riders. She said all the school buildings still have heat and there haven't been any broken pipes or damage to the buildings.

Friday's snow day marks the sixth for the district this school year.  In September, JCPS canceled classes due to forecasted rain and high winds as a result of Hurricane Helene.

The district will ask the board of education to forgive five of its six snow days. JCPS builds in five snow days to its calendar.

The sixth snow day will need to be made up. At this time, JCPS does not have a makeup date scheduled.
