LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Before Jefferson County Public Schools makes a decision on cutting back transportation for thousands of students, it's reviewing all options in the final hours.Ā
The Jefferson County Board of Education is scheduled to meet on Tuesday, March 26, and vote on a plan that would cut back transportation for students who choose to attend magnet or traditional schools and magnet programs.Ā
It is one of three options that has been presented to the board and discussed thoroughly. It would impact roughly 14,000 students.
The other two options include keeping plans the same, or creating magnet "hubs," a central drop-off and pick-up location for magnet and traditional school students.
Eliminating transportation for all magnet and traditional students is the option JCPS said would allow them to cut enough routes, so they would have more drivers than routes.
But on Tuesday, the JCPS Audit Committee reviewed one option not previously discussed in-depth.Ā
It includes continuing to provide transportation to some magnet and traditional schools, for schools that meet a threshold percentage of students on free or reduced lunch.
However, JCPS said challenges in that plan include the number of students on free or reduced lunch changes year-to-year, meaning it may meet the threshold one year and not during another. It also does not cut enough routes, so there would still be delays.
As discussions continue, parents are anxiously waiting for the district to make its final decision.
"Just make a plan or come up with the decision and stick to it," Central High School parent Tiandra Robinson said. "And definitely give parents enough time to make those adjustments, whatever they may be."
JCPS continues to state the only option that guarantees on-time service and the ability to cut a number of routes is no longer offering transportation for magnet and traditional students.Ā
The Jefferson County Board of Education is scheduled to meet March 26 and vote on a transportation plan.
