JCPS eyes purchase of part of Okolona Park for new school, public meeting set for Wednesday

The current school building opened in 1972 and is at the top of the district's facilities replacement list.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) wants to purchase a local park to build a new elementary school.

The school district plans to purchase more than three acres of Okolona Park to build a new Okolona Elementary School. The current school building opened in 1972 and is at the top of the district's facilities replacement list.

JCPS will spend about $40 million to begin construction on the new two-story school next year. Louisville Metro Council still needs to approve the purchase of city land. JCPS proposed the purchase of 3.2 acres of the 12-acre park.

The school district is hosting an informational meeting Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Okolona Elementary School to answer questions from neighbors.
