LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Working to promote self-care, Jefferson County Public Schools hosted its Peace in the Chaos event on Tuesday, teaching students and families strategies to improve care for themselves.
Families broke up into different stations as they were led through different activities like breathing exercises and journal prompts at the Republic Bank Foundation YMCA on West Broadway.
"Kids handle things a whole lot different than we do," said Renee Dixon, who brought her 9-year-old niece to the event. "A lot of things going on in school and the world today, just changes, so hopefully I can learn some things to help her."
The district's goal was to tackle the meaning behind activities in a way even young kids can understand.
"They can teach little kids in the language they can truly understand and they also can work with adults and teach the adults some skills so they can also transfer not only to the young kids, but the older kids to the heads of the family," said Naomi Handley, a JCPS Multi-Tiered Systems of Support manager.
JCPS hopes the skills will help students beyond the classroom.
"We see our kids every day but we don't know what's going on at home with their family so we want to give them the skills to take home and use as well," said Handley.
JCPS partnered with YMCA, Compassionate Schools Project, Volunteers of America, and the D'Angelo Russell Foundation are co-sponsors.
