LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood testified Wednesday before the State Senate Committee on education as lawmakers consider several education bills impacting JCPS.

Yearwood spoke alongside JCPS Board Member James Craig and Jefferson County Teachers Association President Maddie Sheppard, focusing on Senate Bill 1, which would give the superintendent more authority over the district’s day-to-day operations.

Yearwood said he opposes the bill, stressing the importance of the locally elected school board.

“My board members know Louisville better than I do because they were elected by the people of Jefferson County,” Yearwood told lawmakers. “They give me guidance every day about how to navigate the complexities of our community, and I need that.”

Senate Bill 1 passed out of committee Wednesday and now moves forward in the legislative process.
