LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Volunteers lined the sidewalks at Byck Elementary to cheer on students as they headed into school Thursday morning.
Jefferson County Public Schools hosted its first "Mornings with Moms" of the new school year.
Moms, aunts, grandmothers, and community members and leaders helped set a positive and excited tone for the school day.
The district's Diversity, Equity and Poverty Department launched the initiative in 2023 as a spinoff of the JCPS "Flash Dads."
"Students need encouragement and to see faces smiling, positive affirmations and words as they come into the building to get ready to be educated for the day," Makalyn "Svea" Carter, family resource coordinator and mom, said.
The next Mornings with Moms event will be Oct. 16.
