LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Students at Wellington Elementary School in Louisville are embracing the history and culture of Black hair.

The program is called "The Culture of the Crown."

Students spent weeks researching and learning about the uniqueness and history surrounding Black hair. Then, they presented what they learned to their classmates during a showcase Friday.

"Right when we had the assignment for us, I had no idea about the history. I just knew about the hair discrimination," 3rd grader Etienne Sessoafa said.

Topics ranged from the history of Black barbers to legislation put in place to stop hair discrimination.

"We value our hair, but it needs to be valued in every aspect. When we are playing sports, when we are in certain professions," Christy Morgan, 3rd grade teacher at Wellington, said.

Hairstylists, barbers, and braiders also shared their knowledge and experiences with students at the event.
