LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The Washington County Sheriff's Office is looking for a driver that nearly hit a child getting off a school bus Wednesday afternoon.
The sheriff's office released surveillance video from the Washington County Schools bus that captured the incident, which happened around 3:30 p.m. on Bardstown Road during "peak traffic."
Police said the bus had its signal lights on and its stop-arm out while dropping off a child at their stop.
As the child steps off to cross the road, an oncoming car can be seen disregarding the stop signals and driving right past the bus.
Police said the car came "dangerously close" to hitting the child.
"This reckless behavior is entirely unacceptable and puts innocent young lives at direct risk," the sheriff's office said.
Washington County deputies are working to identify the vehicle and the driver. The office said it is "actively monitoring" school zones and bus routes.
Under Kentucky law, drivers are required to stop any time a school or church bus has its signal lights on and its stop-arm out.
Drivers who illegally pass a stopped school bus can receive a $300 civil penalty for a first offense and $500 for additional violations within three years.
"Please slow down, pay attention, and look out for our kids," the sheriff's office said. "A few seconds saved is not worth a child's life."
