LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A local program that helps young people achieve significant life goals now has a brand new student dormitory.

YouthBuild held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday for its new student residence on East Breckinridge Street, just three blocks away from the program's main campus.

YouthBuild Louisville provides education, job training and leadership programs to low-income young adults between the ages of 18 and 24. The hope is to inspire students to "reach lifelong success as they become strong, confident young adults with a commitment to work, education, family and community." The new residence hall provides up to three bedrooms and six beds for students and their children.

The new space was built by YouthBuild participants.

"The fact that young people built it themselves, that's just the love that's transferred from class to class is really something that we're super proud of," said Lynn Rippy, YouthBuild president and CEO.

Students will fill out Section 8 applications to ensure affordability. The local nonprofit plans to hire a resident assistant to provide overnight and weekend support for students.

According to a news release, there are at least 100 homeless youth between the ages of 18 to 24 on the wait list for affordable housing.
