LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — What began as a rushed wedding inside a hospital room has turned into a full-circle celebration for an Elizabethtown couple now marking one year of marriage.

Sylvia and Doug Bindner returned to UofL Hospital over the weekend to celebrate their anniversary — the same place where they said "I do" after a sudden cancer diagnosis changed their original plans.

The couple had been set to marry in October, but moved the ceremony up to June last year after Sylvia was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

The staff from UofL Health helped transform the hospital into a wedding space. Nurses, music therapists, chefs and other employees worked together to create a ceremony the couple didn’t want to postpone any longer.

Just a day after the wedding, Sylvia underwent surgery to remove the tumor.

Since then, she has been in remission, and the couple has been building their life together as husband and wife.

To mark their first anniversary, hospital staff once again helped make the day special — welcoming the Bindners back to the place where their story took an unexpected turn, and where it first began to shift toward healing.

The couple says returning brought back memories of both uncertainty and gratitude, and a reminder of the people who stepped in when it mattered most.
