LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Transportation officials have ordered an "immediate closure" of the "Singing Bridge" in downtown Frankfort.
In a release, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) cited structural safety concerns for the closure, which impacts drivers and pedestrians that use the bridge to cross U.S. 60 over the Kentucky River. The bridge will be closed until further notice. There are no estimates on when it will reopen.
KYTC District 5 posted a picture this week of a "routine" inspection of the 130-year-old bridge. That inspection apparently found significant structural deterioration that affects the bridge’s weight-carrying capacity. Before being closed, the bridge had weight limit of 4 tons following a 2022 inspection.
State engineers made the decision to shut down the bridge. KYTC said further assessments and evaluations are needed to determine the next steps.
About 3,400 vehicles cross the bridge each day per day. Drivers are being told to use the U.S. 60/Capital Avenue bridge as an alternate route.
