VINCENNES, Ind. (AP) -- A former home for the poor could find new life as a women's shelter if officials in a southwestern Indiana county agree to transfer the property.
Sandy Ivers wants to acquire the Victorian-era building in Knox County for a program that targets women leaving jail. She hopes to have the building sometime this summer.
But some county officials are wary.
Commissioner Donnie Halter tells the Vincennes Sun-Commercial that no other group has expressed interest in the property. But he isn't sure the county can transfer the property to Ivers without first making it available to the general public.
Halter says the structure is falling apart and will need repairs before anyone can use the property.
