LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A local nonprofit that helps people in need get free dental work has hit a major milestone.

Free Smiles Louisville has now performed more than $1 million in free work.

The group started back in 2015 and is made up of a large group of volunteers, many of whom are dental students at the University of Louisville.

The nonprofit held a celebration Thursday night to mark the occasion.

"It's very rewarding to be able to give back in that way and to kind of cut through the red tape, those of us who have worked with nonprofit clinics know how hard it can be to go through billing and Medicaid and all of the red tape. With this, the person just shows up, and we treat them. We don't have to worry about any of that," dental hygienist Jennifer Harrison said.

Free Smiles Louisville has clinics once or twice a month.
