LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Gov. Andy Beshear vetoed a bill that would lower the age to carry a concealed weapon.
House Bill 312 would have allowed 18 to 20-year-olds to apply for a provisional concealed carry license. Current state law limits concealed carry permits to people 21 and older.
If the bill passed, applicants would go through a safety course similar to those required in other states.
Beshear said in his veto message on April 2 he vetoed the bill in honor of his friend Tommy Elliott, who was killed in the April 10, 2023 Old National Bank shooting.
"Tonight, I'm remembering my friend Tommy Elliott, who was murdered along with four other children of God three years ago in an act of gun violence," Beshear said.
Lawmakers have a couple of days this month where they could override the veto.
