LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An EF1 tornado touched down in Meade County, but Hardin County was also damaged in the storms on Sunday.

Severe weather hit Kentucky on Sunday, leaving a wake of damage and at least five confirmed deaths around the state. An EF1 tornado with 90 mph winds touched down in eastern Meade County near northern Hardin County, just south of Fort Knox.

Shana Norton spent Monday working in her backyard to clean up after Sunday's storms. She lives on Foxfire Road in Elizabethtown.

"We walked around back and I was like 'oh my all  of our trees in the backyard are down,'" Norton said.

Norton felt the strong winds first-hand. Utility companies have already replaced three snapped power poles in the neighborhood.

"Thankfully the city picks up all of your storm debris so it is just a matter of getting it chopped up and getting it to the road," Norton said.

A 62-year-old woman in Hardin County died during the storm after suffering a medical emergency in her home.

"The 911 center took a huge volume of calls within an hour's time and they had to call in extra dispatchers," said Joey Scott with Hardin County Emergency Management.

Meade County was also hit hard by the storm. A farm on Rabbit Run Road had trees snapped in half.

"We have mineral rocks underneath so for it to rip it in half tells me it was significant," said Kent French, a Meade County resident.

The National Weather Service said an EF1 tornado briefly touched down and raced across the area for just over a mile.

On Monday, Hardin County EMS worked with Meade County EMS and fire officials assess the clean up and work on a timeline.

"We have a lot of trees down quite a few power lines down but we were really fortunate that we didn't have a whole lot of structural damage," Scott said.

Calmer weather for the week will help neighbors pick up the pieces from a chaotic Sunday. Only a few hundreds customers remained without power in Meade and Hardin counties as of Monday evening.
