LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A fire chief in Floyd County resigned and retired amid an HR investigation into him.

Highlander Fire Protection District board of trustees accepted Chief Jeremy Klein's resignation and retirement after 18 years as chief and 36 as a firefighter.

The board released a letter that thanked Klein for his service and credited him for expanding fire and EMS services in the community.

Highlander Fire Protection District is taking over for more parts of Floyd County after fallout from Jamey Noel's fraud scheme with New Chapel EMS funds.

On July 4, the board of trustees over the fire district put Klein on paid administrative leave due to "HR issues."

The letter didn't address the investigation or if it's complete.

Klein declined to do an interview but his daughter shared several photos of Klein over the years.

The family said they look forward to spending more time with him and he looks forward to being able to enjoy being a grandpa.

There's also confusion from community members after a sign congratulating Chief Klein on his retirement was removed.

A photo was taken Thursday and by Friday it was removed. The board hasn't responded to a request for comment.

The fire protection district said it's actively looking for a new chief as Interim Chief Herthel continues to serve in the role for the time being.
