LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — When it comes to horses, the Derby City and the Bluegrass is in a category of its own, and so are those who compete behind the scenes.
The Derby City Classic happened on Saturday, pitting horseshoe farriers against each other for the title of the best at Stone Palace Stables in Prospect.
Some of the categories the farriers competed in included Novice Live shoeing, Student High Point, and Intermediate Live Shoeing.
The focus of the categories was on shoe fit and placement of nail holes.
"It is a contest, but it is a continuing education event," Zeke Evans, Derby City Horseshoeing Association President, said. "We are here to learn more and practice and put ourselves in front of each other and just be judged on where we are in our work and try to get better each and every day."
This year, there were 19 competitors from all over the U.S.
