CORYDON, Ind. (WDRB) -- A person of interest in a double homicide died after a high-speed chase that ended in a horrific crash on State Road 135 in Corydon early Friday.Â
Indiana State Police Sgt. Carey Huls said that's where a car being chased by police crashed into a utility pole around 5:30 a.m. That was just a few hours after a state trooper spotted the car in a parking lot in Corydon, after Evansville police put out an alert that it could possibly be connected to a double murder that happened in Evansville just before midnight.Â
The trooper recognized the car from the alert and called the Harrison County Sheriff's Office for backup. Just as the sheriff's deputy pulled in the parking lot, Huls said the gold car took off at a high rate of speed, heading north on 135.
As the driver approached a curve in the road, the car hit the curb of a driveway, sending the vehicle airborne. The car then struck a utility pole before coming to rest in a ditch, about a half-mile from where the chase started, Huls said.Â
"They had been out looking for awhile for the vehicle, believing it might possibly be in this area," Huls said. "And then to spot it and say, hey, we might have a resolution to this, but obviously not expecting what happen to happen. It's a lot of emotions in a very short amount of time. One of those things that makes the job quite stressful at times."
The driver died at the scene. He has since been identified by Indiana State Police as 30-year-old Samuel Aaron Robb, of Valparaiso, Indiana. According to Indiana State Police, he was a person of interest sought in connection with a double-homicide.
Several law enforcement agencies were at the scene of the crash along with ISP, including Harrison County, Corydon Police, Jeffersonville Police, and the Evansville Police Department.Â
S.R. 135 was closed just north of I-64 for several hours, but reopened around 9 a.m.
