LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — When you do good, good things happen. That’s a life lesson Cedric Goodrich, grandfather and guardian to Shane Crowe and Mason Goodrich, hopes his grandsons will carry with them forever.
"Sometimes you get instant karma," Goodrich reflected. "You do good, and you’re instantly rewarded for it. The only thing that comes from doing bad is consequences. I’d rather put out as much good as possible and have that good come back than do something bad and hope nothing happens."
Goodrich’s words have already rung true. After WDRB featured Shane and Mason shoveling sidewalks for free in their neighborhood last week, a viewer was inspired to step up and gift them a snow blower to help their efforts.
"It makes me feel pretty good inside," said Shane Crowe. "I don’t want the money, but the snow blower, yes, I’ll be honest. But it’s really about setting an example. I want my peers to step up and help the community, too. I believe my generation needs to take charge and lead."
Shane, a senior at Louisville Male High School, will head to the University of Louisville this fall after a short stint with the Navy. His younger brother Mason, a sophomore at Pleasure Ridge Park High School, is the quieter of the two. It was Mason’s idea to start shoveling sidewalks together, a task that has brought them closer as brothers.
"I don’t have too much longer with him," Mason said, acknowledging Shane’s upcoming departure for the Navy and college. "So I want to do everything I can with him while he’s still here."
Their story has captured hearts online and on social media, turning the brothers into local celebrities of sorts — a role they find a bit amusing.
"I’ve become an instant PR guy," Shane joked. "It’s been a lot of fun."
Though they know the spotlight will eventually fade, the lessons they’ve learned about kindness and community will last a lifetime.
"They’re living it," Goodrich said. "They’ve experienced firsthand that if you do good, good things happen to you. That’s what I want them to carry with them in life, and that will take them far."
On Tuesday, Shane and Mason will be late to school for a special reason. They have a big appointment at City Hall to share their story and inspire even more people to take action in their communities.
