LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) -- The movement of some Jefferson County Public Schools administrators back to the Van Hoose Education Center is freeing up space at Gheens Academy for more Louisville Male High School classrooms.

The district's chief academic officer and six academic assistant superintendents are out of town attending a Harvard University seminar and when they return Monday, they will have new office space on the second floor of central office. 

After spending three years at Gheen's Academy on Preston Highway, Superintendent Donna Hargens decided earlier this spring to bring the administrators back to Van Hoose as part of a reorganization of central office.

"We're moving," said Cherri Beckhart, a secretary for JCPS assistant superintendent Amy Dennes. "We're happy to be coming to Van Hoose from Gheens. It's progress."

Beckhart says everyone working within the same four walls will be helpful.

"I think the function is going to be the same. Again, proximity is going to play an important part that we'll all get used to,” she told WDRB.

The move leaves the rooms on the second floor of Gheens Academy empty, but not for very long.

"Whenever the board gives us a green light is when we'll really start moving in there,” said Jim Jury, principal of Male High School.

They'll serve as extra classrooms for Male High School, which Jury says is going to solve the school's overcrowding issue.

“We have six teachers right now who are on carts and we have students who eat lunch in the front entryway,” he said.

Jury says with the added classrooms, those teachers will now have permanent classrooms instead of having to move from room to room.

The school of about 1,800 students will finally have room to spread out a little.

“There are some logistics to work out but the space is really much needed and much appreciated,” said Jury.

The moving is underway now and is expected to be finished by the first day of school Aug. 12.
