LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Kentucky Festival unveiled the map for the 2024 GE Appliances miniMarathon and Marathon, announcing the race's return to south Louisville for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic modified the route.
Both races will be run entirely on the south side of the Ohio River for the first time since 2019. They'll begin on Main Street near Louisville Slugger Field before heading south on 4th Street to Churchill Downs. They'll run a lap round the historic racetrack just one week before the running of the 150th Kentucky Derby.
"Louisville has been our home for 70 years and to experience this race course that features all the best this city has to offer is something to see," Kevin Nolan, president and CEO of GE Appliances, a Haier Company, said in a news release Wednesday. "From running through Churchill Downs, experiencing Louisville’s historic neighborhoods or grabbing a bourbon at the finish line, this race is unique to any other race in the country. We can’t wait to welcome lots of folks to see what Louisville has to offer and why it’s our home."
Half-marathoners will then begin their northern return toward downtown Louisville to finish at Lynn Family Stadium. Marthoners will continue south onto Southern Parkway and race through Iroquois Park before returning downtown.
"Our race has a special history and longstanding tradition with Iroquois Park and the neighborhoods along Southern Parkway," Matt Gibson, president and CEO of Kentucky Derby Festival, said in a news release Wednesday. "We know running through this area is something our runners have missed, and we are excited to return the Marathon to its South Louisville roots in the spring."
