LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear's office recently tasked one of his attorneys with taking calls and checking on claims for people who contacted WDRB with unemployment issues.

In a story that aired Jan. 16, WDRB Investigates reported the state has sent 38,476 overpayment letters to Kentuckians related to pandemic-era unemployment benefits.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of Kentuckians found themselves suddenly out of work. But Kentucky's unemployment system, which relies on computer software dating back to the 1970s, struggled to handle the surge in claims during the pandemic.

Since that story aired last week, many viewers reached out saying they can't get ahold of the state unemployment office. Some have started paying back the money, while others have been fighting the claims as well. According to Rosalind Harvey, executive director of the Office of Communications for Kentucky's Education and Labor Cabinet, the state office is looking into cases brought to WDRB.
