LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A wanted fugitive on the run for more than a year is in custody, thanks to the sharp eyes of an off-duty police officer.

LMPD announced the arrest in a post on its Facebook page Monday.

According to the post, Joseph D. Johnson was wanted on seven warrants in Kentucky, including one for theft by unlawful taking. In that case, Johnson, 38, allegedly loaded a Craftsman generator into a cart at the Lowe's at 9800 Preston Crossing, then left the store without paying for it.

Police said he hid in a parking lot from a loss prevention officer and "when loss prevention got close, he emerged from behind a pillar and knocked LP to the ground and continued to assault LP until he fled."

Johnson was spotted by an off-duty officer Sunday night at Derby City Gaming in downtown Louisville and arrested without incident.

Johnson was in court Monday, where he pleaded not guilty to theft by unlawful taking. The judge set his bond at $75,000 cash.

Johnson also faces several charges -- including theft, robbery and escape -- on his outstanding warrants. Police said he also had arrest warrants out of Indiana and Tennessee.

His next court appearance in Jefferson County is scheduled for June 18.
