LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- With rain in the Halloween forecast, some Louisville-area parents are wondering the best way to keep trick-or-treat traditions alive.
In Louisville and southern Indiana, some local businesses and churches are stepping up to provide safe, indoor trick-or-treating options, keeping the spirit of Halloween alive for kids and families alike.
In fact, Pat Harrison has been doing it for nearly 40 years. From 6-8 p.m. on Halloween night at the Floyd County 4-H Fairgrounds, she creates a safe space for trick-or-treaters and annual Halloween Costume Carnival.
Harrison, who dresses each year as a "Fairy Godmother," said the event started in the 1980s as a response to concerns over candy tampering.
"They were actually x-raying their candy at the hospital ... and I had one son," Harrison said Wednesday. "There were so many things going on we needed a party."Â
Harrison others wanted to offer a safe, family-friendly Halloween alternative, and, over the years, it has become a beloved southern Indiana tradition.
Trick-or-treating inside Louisville's malls is a thing of the past, but Burnett Avenue Baptist Church on Hurstbourne Parkway is opening its doors from 6-8 p.m. on Halloween. You don't have to be a member to go.
"A silent disco area will be happening in the sanctuary, we have a chili cook off, a costume contest (and) we have DJs in our four main areas," said Lauren Broadus, an event manager for the night.
Kids are encouraged to wear costumes with one request: nothing scary.
"You will get plenty of candy," said Pam Fulton Broadus, another event manager. "You will have a good time. It is really probably one of the biggest, most fun events that will be happening on Halloween."
AMVETS Post 9 is hosting a trunk-or-treat and maze on Halloween from 5-8 p.m. at 1567 S. Shelby Street. Booths will be set up inside if necessary due to weather.
Across the Louisville area, some cities and towns are suggesting trick or treaters add ponchos to the Halloween costumes, others are opting for a different day as rainy weather is currently forecasted.
