LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month and it's the perfect time to get screened.
Doctors encourage people 45 and older to get a colonoscopy. Early detection leads to more treatment options and higher survival rates, they say.
In addition to screening, there are several things you can do to reduce your risk of colorectal cancer.
"What a person can do to decrease the risk is to maintain a healthy weight, increase the fiber in their diet — somewhere around 30 grams a day — and to decrease the amount of red meat," said Dr. Nechol Allen, a colon and rectal surgeon at Baptist Health Louisville. "It's kind of hard in an American diet, but that's what researchers have found to help most people."
Baptist Health Louisville said it will provide screening resources at a Colon Cancer Awareness Fair on March 30. It will be held at the Beulah Church Farmers Market on Bardstown Road.
