LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville firefighter was recognized for his heroic action.

Mayor Craig Greenberg honored Louisville Division of Fire’s Juan Pablo Saavedra yesterday for his courage and quick thinking.

On June 7, Saavedra was off-duty on his way home when he saw a car in flames that traveled to a nearby building on Second and Oak Street. He quickly called 911 and entered the burning building to evacuate the people inside. The mayor's office also said Saavedra checked other apartments and buildings to confirm everyone was safe. He then stayed on the scene with other firefighters until it was under control.

“I am so honored to present to you with a proclamation to honor your heroism, your bravery, and your dedication to public service,” said Greenberg at the ceremony.

Saavedra was also named this week’s Louisvillian Doing Good for his daring effort. Greenberg announces a Louisvillian Doing Good on Louisvilleky.org every Tuesday in his weekly update.
