LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Corrections and The Criminal Justice Commission is receiving a grant for $250,000 to improve the jail.

According to a news release, the grant is intended to fund the planning, development and implementation of a comprehensive jail-based crisis response and intervention training program, which will be assisted by the Bounce Coalition and Bureau of Justice Assistance. It will provide skills and knowledge to equip staff and help people housed at the jail.

The training will focus on de-escalation skills, disability awareness and crisis response, along with trauma-informed best practices.

"Numerous folks in our facility have experienced some form of trauma in their lives, and this training will better equip our staff to effectively communicate and assist them," Metro Corrections Chief Jerry Collins said in a news release. "My staff also experience trauma, sometimes on a daily basis; access to more resources and training helps to improve the well-being of those that work here, which in turn fosters healthier conditions for everyone."

The training is scheduled for Oct. 2023 to Sept. 2026.
