LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A 20-year-old from Louisville will bike across the country this summer, not just to make memories, but to save them.

Carter Chapman is biking with 11 of his Phi Gamma Delta fraternity brothers to raise money for Alzheimer's research. Chapman will bike 75 miles a day for 72 days, crossing the nation from San Francisco to Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The Bike-4-Alz journey is personal for the WKU FIJI chapter. A fraternity member launched the fundraising effort in 2010 after his grandfather died from Alzheimer's. Since then, Bike-4-Alz has raised more than $600,000.

"Pretty much every guy on the team has some connection to Alzheimer's directly that drives them and if not, we've talked to people who have been impacted, and we'll get to talk to people impacted by Alzheimer's along the way, so it will just be more of a driver for us to keep pedaling when it gets difficult and help us realize were doing something bigger than ourselves, and it's more than biking everyday," Chapman said.

Nearly 7 million older Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease.
