LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Louisville Metro Department of Corrections has a new treatment plan for inmates struggling with opioid use.

The plan is a medication-assisted treatment where patients will be able to receive all FDA-approved medications, including methadone.

This is the first program of its type in Kentucky.

LMDC Chief Jerry Collins said the program is a step towards improving the entire community.

"Not only help the patient and make the community safer but see that decrease, like I stated earlier on the numbers of how many folks come into the jail on drug-related charges," Collins said.

Collins said there are currently 75 inmates in the treatment program.
