LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — As many people were celebrating moms for Mother's Day Sunday, there's a local nonprofit that provides regular support for moms in need in Louisville.
Granny's Birth Initiative, located at 708 S. 16th Street, offers maternity support services for mothers and families. The organization was started in 2018 and has consistently grown over the years.
The nonprofit helps transport moms to and from their prenatal, postpartum and lactation appointments at a low cost through its Doula Dash program.
They also supply diapers, wipes, milk and even clothes for moms in need, and many of the services they offer are free.
"We are your support system through your entire journey before pregnancy during pregnancy and after. We don't leave you hanging," assistant director Brittany Phillips said.
Phillips said GBI is now serving 200 clients a month.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau's latest American Community Survey, about 40 percent of households with children in Jefferson County are single-parent households, creating a need for added support.
Stacey Grover connected with the nonprofit when she found out she was pregnant.
As a single mother who is new to motherhood, she's still adjusting after to having her first child.
"I'm a very independent person," Grover said. "With this experience of pregnancy and postpartum, I had to be humbled."
Grover's health took a fast decline after she gave birth to her daughter, forcing her to lean on GBI more than she thought she would need to.
"After pregnancy, I ended up developing chronic lymphedema and then neuropathy. Before that, I was able to walk and move like normal and able to drive. After baby I wasn't able to with my condition," Grover said.
Grover used the Doula Dash program to get to her postpartum appointments. She said GBI staff was there to help with whatever she needed.
Grover initially asked for support during her rough start to motherhood, but she got something much more.
"They actually became like my family," Grover said.
GBI is funded through donations.
