LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville-based nonprofit is sending hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of medical supplies to Africa.

SOS International loaded a semitruck container full of supplies to go to Malawi on Thursday morning.

The container was filled in partnership with the University of Louisville School of Medicine and the Envirome Institute.

Doctors at a hospital in Malawi will get more than $273,000 worth of surgical, testing and PPE equipment. That will help them perform surgeries without delay and provide testing to prevent disease outbreaks.

"This particular container not only is increasing access to medical care, particularly for children, delivering food to an area that's being hit by famine," said Denise Sears, president and CEO of SOS International. "It's also working with the universities on disease tracking, so there's a whole science research aspect to this container. This impacts all of us here."

SOS partners with more than 100 hospitals to recover surplus medical supplies, keeping more than 500,000 pounds from landfills each year.
