LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A grand opening ceremony was held Tuesday for Smoketown-Ballard Park.
The park, formerly known as Ballard Park, now features a timber playground, picnic pavilion, fitness stations, basketball amenities and expanded green space.
"This is a celebration of what happens when we invest in our neighborhoods and listen to the people who call them home," Mayor Craig Greenberg said in a news release Tuesday. "The new Smoketown-Ballard Park reflects our commitment to improving parks throughout the city and making sure every community has safe, modern spaces to gather."
Neighbors helped redesign the park by sharing feedback at meetings, events and workshops.
More than $1.5 million was invested in the project. Metro Council pledged $800,000, and the Parks Alliance of Louisville raised the remaining $700,000.
Smoketown-Ballard Park is one of many parks renovated through Louisville’s Parks For All Action Plan.
A grand opening celebration at the park is planned for 1-3 p.m. Saturday, July 11, with food trucks, refreshments, face painting, a DJ, community booths and other activities for children and families.
