LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The Louisville Metro Police Department has announced several promotions within its ranks, including five officers who were elevated to higher positions during a ceremony held at Metro Hall Thursday morning.
Among those promoted was Sgt. Joel Casse, who has served with LMPD for 16 years.
Casse was promoted to Lieutenant and will now help oversee operations in the Sixth Division. His decision to join the force, despite the risks, was driven by a deep desire to serve his community.
Casse cited fallen officer Peter Grignon, who died in the line of duty in 2005, as an inspiration.
"Obviously we're short officers 200 plus, and all I can tell people is, this is the best job in the world," Casse said. "There’s days where it may not feel like it, but overall it’s a great job. We need great people to do this job, and I want you to be a part of the change with me."
Another officer receiving a promotion was Stephen Lacefield, who joined LMPD 19 years ago after a ride-along with a friend inspired him to pursue a career in law enforcement.
Lacefield was promoted to Major. For the last two plus years, he has been commander of LMPD's non-fatal shooting unit. Reflecting on his journey, Lacefield recalled his initial excitement upon learning that LMPD would pay him to do what he loved.
"I can see that having rapport with people out there, they're figuring out we're trying to help them," Lacefield said. "We want to help this city, and we are going to help this city."
The officers were recognized by Mayor Craig Greenberg, who praised their accomplishments, and received advice from Chief Paul Humphrey, who emphasized the importance of continual improvement within the department.
"Question what went well, and question what didn’t," Humphrey said. "There’s always an opportunity to improve."
The five promoted officers are stepping into new roles at a time when LMPD faces a shortage of more than 200 officers. Despite the challenges, both Casse and Lacefield expressed optimism for the future of the department and their commitment to making a positive impact on the community.
"It’s a great time to be a part of this team," Lacefield said.
Casse echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the importance of serving with integrity and dedication.
"It’s just something that’s inside of me that I know I was given the ability to serve, and I want to do that the best I can," he said.
