SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A mobile RV pulled up to the Paroquet Springs Conference Centre in Shepherdsville on Monday to offer low-cost mammograms in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.Â
With the exception of skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women. The Kentucky Cancer Program offered the mammograms Monday through its mobile mammography unit. The RV travels to communities across the state to provide screenings, because early detection is the key to giving women the best chance at beating a potential cancer diagnosis.
"It's really wonderful knowing that we can help women keep up with their health care," said Pam Temple with The Kentucky Cancer Program. "And the women that usually come here, they are so appreciative, they're excited to see us. And it's good to know that you're actually helping these women stay up to date."
Wendy Keown was the first patient to get a mammogram screening Monday, an appointment she never misses.
"I've ben getting mammograms for the past 12 years," she said. "My very first mammogram, they found something, and it went straight through to ultrasound."
And while it was benign, she saw first-hand the importance of the annual screenings.
"It woke me up, and I realized I need to get these yearly to keep on top of it," Keown said.
While coordinators of the mobile screenings ask for proper ID and insurance cards, there is an option for low-cost screenings even if you don't have insurance.
"We bring the mobile unit to their back door, front door, wherever they need it," Temple said. "If they don't have insurance, we see if they qualify for the Kentucky Women's Cancer Screening Program."
The women make it a quick appointment once you're all checked in.
"Having the mobile unit makes it convenient, especially when we're in neighborhoods that may have transportation problems," Temple said.
The Kentucky Cancer Program has dozens of events scheduled though the end of the year, including some in Louisville later this week. To see the full list, click here.
