Mother of Louisville's latest homicide victim: 'A car came past and they shot him'

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- While friends would refer to Christopher Goldsmith simply as “Chris,” his mother never hesitated to use his full name.

“I called him Christopher,” said Jacqueline Goldsmith. “He was a good child. He was a respectful child. He always did what I asked of him. He’d do anything he could for anybody.”

Around noon Saturday, the 32-year-old, a part-time caterer, was just one street over from where he lived with his mother.

According to LMPD, Christopher Goldsmith was shot several times in broad daylight outside of a home on Camp Street near Shelby Park.

“He was visiting a friend and he was sitting on the friend’s porch when it happened,” Jacqueline Goldsmith said. “A car had been circling the block real slowly and he just happened to be the only person sitting out there and they shot him.”

Christopher Goldsmith was pronounced dead at University Hospital. His death marks the city of Louisville’s 100th homicide of 2016.

“I think it’s ridiculous that we have had 100 people killed in this city,” said Jacqueline Goldsmith.

It’s a number that hasn’t been seen since the 1970s.

In 1971, there were 110 homicides in Louisville.

As the number for 2016 gets dangerously close to setting a new record, Jacqueline Goldsmith begs the community to put down the weapons.

“You should stop the violence and instead of handling things with guns, come together and speak to one another,” said Jacqueline Goldsmith. “Other women and other men have lost their children through violence in this city and it just needs to stop.”

Family members have set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for Christopher Goldsmith’s burial.
