LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Mt. Washington residents are under a boil water advisory as crews work to fix a broken water main.
Mt. Washington City Hall posted on Facebook the main water line to the city experienced a break around 3:30 p.m. Monday. Multiple residents reported not having water, and the break in the 16-inch pipe grew overnight, eventually shattering.
Bullitt County Schools announced around 6:15 a.m. Tuesday that school was canceled for the day due to the break. City offices also closed until 12 p.m. Tuesday, and hydrants were flushed throughout the city.
Just after noon Tuesday, the city said water will be off "longer than anticipated" as work continues on a fix. By 2:45 p.m., however, water was flowing through pipes, and officials said service was expected to return in a few hours, though full pressure may not return until Wednesday morning.
But the boil water advisory will remain.
"Once water is restored all customers of the Mt. Washington Water District will be under a boil water advisory until further notice," the Facebook post said. "We apologize for the inconvenience."
Donna Eades, an employee at Crystal's Country Diner on Bardstown Road, was one of only two people in the restaurant Tuesday, a sign on the door telling customers they're closed with no water running.
"It's just bull crap," Eades said. "With the heat, that's cost us business because people are staying home out of the heat."
The city helped deliver 3,700 bottles of water on trucks and trailers to assisted living facilities and medical facilities.
"I wasn't able to take a shower and get ready to go to the doctor so I just poured a bottle of water on my wash cloth and washed and brushed my teeth with bottled water," Sheryle Johns, a Mt. Washington resident, said Tuesday.
The city is looking at its existing infrastructure and valve system, something it's already started to replace.
Eades is hoping her restaurant is back to being busy as soon as possible.
"I'm serious," she said. "This is costing us money."
