LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Hot weather didn’t keep the crowds away from the Kentucky State Fair opening weekend, where thousands packed the fairgrounds for food, rides, animals and live music.
Kentucky State Fair officials said the first weekend of the fair was a success despite the blazing temperatures.
"Generations of families have been able to come to this event and see that it's not just an outdoor experience, it's one that you can enjoy and be entertained inside," Kentucky State Fair and Kentucky Venues spokesperson Ian Cox said.
Some fairgoers have been going to the fair for more than 30 years.
"I love it every year, some people say they're tired of it, but I never get tired of the Kentucky State Fair," Laurie Crume, fairgoer, said.
People of all ages showed out, and a fan favorite food was the jumbo hot dog.
A lot of people showed up for the Roots & Boots concert with Aaron Tippin, Collin Raye and Sammy Kershaw.
Weird food combinations were also the talk of the fair. Pickle pizza, hot honey pepperoni pizza, a chicken bacon waffle sandwich and of course the donut burger.
"Today is the day to indulge and enjoy in the fair delicacies you only get to have this time of the year," Cox said.
Cox also said to make sure you know the rules before you show up, including the chaperone policy, so you don't get turned away at the gate.
Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 21 every weekday after 6 p.m. Chaperones are needed all day Friday and Saturday.
This is just the first weekend though as the fair runs through Sunday, Aug. 24. WDRB Day at the fair is Friday, Aug. 22.
