CHARLESTOWN, Ind. (WDRB) -- A new apartment complex is coming to southern Indiana.
Charlestown Mayor Treva Hodges said the city has seen more than 200 building permits per year since 2020, but very few apartment permits.
A 248-unit luxury multifamily apartment complex, called the Forest Edge Apartments, will be built on Depot Street the city's downtown area.
City leaders and the developer, Denton Floyd Real Estate Group, came together for a groundbreaking on the complex Wednesday morning.
Hodges said Charlestown has seen a lot of economic growth as the U.S. faces a housing shortage.
"This development is, very appropriately, timed because it will help us stay ahead of that true crisis," she said. "It's very much needed right now. That's how we think here — how can we put stuff in place now, early on, before it becomes that crisis?"
Amenities at the complex will include a resort-style heated pool, a pet spa, a car wash, a cybercafe, EV charging stations, a 24-hour fitness center, a playground, a community center, bike repair, a pet park, fire pits and grills. There will be 1-, 2, and 3-bedroom units available.
Construction is expected to wrap up by fall 2025.
