LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Humana Health and Well-Being Center on Main Street in downtown Louisville is a new high-tech way to see your doctor.
The telemedicine suite was designed for urban professionals who don't have enough time to see the doctor. Patients use the latest audio and video technology to speak directly to a physician or nurse practitioner who evaluates, diagnoses and treats their medical condition.
They can look in your ear or throat and listen to your heartbeat with special tools equipped with cameras. There is also an on-site nurse who can give immunizations, and who helps with other medical needs.
Keith Borowicz, the Concentra Product Manager says, "This is a telemedicine cart. It includes a pan, tilt, zoom camera on top of a 27-inch monitor. There's a couple of drawers with diagnostic tools."
Dr. Mike Noble, the Medical Director says, "We try to take care of lot of the urgent care type of things here as well as chronic disease management. I think that's the niche where we can increase how easy it is for someone to come and actually see us."
Patients are also assisted by an on-site medical professional during their visit. Telemedicine is currently used in 34 percent of U.S. health centers.
Tim Huval, Humana Chief Human Resources Officer, explains, "All associates have access to the well-being center. It's $40 a visit, no charge for visits that are preventative, that puts us in a position to make it really convenient with access. We've got a primary care doc that will be on point for this facility down the street."
This is Humana's second Well-being Center that features a tele-med site.
