LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A new class of officers just joined the ranks at Louisville Metro Department of Corrections.

Members of Corrections Academy Class 140 were officially sworn in during a graduation ceremony in the Mayor's Gallery Friday morning.

The recruits spent months learning their way around the criminal justice system. They're ready to get to work, and hope to play their part in making Louisville a better place.

"To be a corrections officer, it takes a special person," LMDC officer Kevin Ellenbrand said. "You're dealing with the same group of people 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so it takes a special person to be able to do it. I think it's a very rewarding career when you can say that you've helped somebody."

Metro Corrections continues to hire and train recruits to address a staffing shortage inside the jail.

Staffing issues played a role in safety and security lapses that led to the deaths of several inmates over the last few years.
