LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB/WAVE) — A new solar manufacturing plant is officially open in Jeffersonville, bringing 1,200 jobs.

C-S PowerTech, part of Canadian Solar Inc., celebrated the opening of its photovoltaic (PV), cell manufacturing facility Friday at River Ridge Commerce Center.

The plant will manufacture solar cells, the technology that captures sunlight and converts it into electricity for solar panels. Company officials said the facility is expected to produce up to 6 gigawatts of solar cells each year.

Leaders said the investment is another milestone for River Ridge, which has continued to attract large manufacturing projects in recent years.

"It's very fulfilling," said Marc Hildenbrand of the River Ridge Development Authority. "I've been associated with River Ridge since 2009, so I've seen it go from a very small industrial park to what it is now."

Hildenbrand said years of planning, infrastructure improvements and investment helped make projects like C-S PowerTech possible.
