LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- As the rain and cold settled over Louisville on New Year’s Eve, many people were opting to stay home.

For some, it was Tuesday's rainy weather. For others, New Year’s Eve outings feel like an adventure for a younger crowd. But for Corey Taylor, staying home this year was about something much more profound—a fresh start and the joy of being reunited with his dog.

At Liquor Island, a liquor store on Preston Highway, the scene was lively. Customers come and go as Coco, the store owner’s dog, gleefully plays tug-of-war with willing participants. Amidst the activity, Corey Taylor stops in, not for alcohol, but for non-alcoholic iced tea.

“This year, me and my dog were separated, but I got him back through my foster parents,” Taylor shares. “I’ll be spending the rest of New Year’s with my dog.”

Taylor, who recently moved into a new apartment, explains why he’s staying home. “The streets get kinda wild after about 12 o’clock, then about 3 (a.m.) or 4 (a.m.) it’s really wild,” he said, reflecting on the chaos that often accompanies New Year’s celebrations.

More importantly, Taylor is determined to embrace a healthier lifestyle.

“I used to drink. Matter of fact, in the new year, I’m going to become sober,” he said.

Taylor's resolution is not just about alcohol; it’s about embracing the stability he has worked so hard to achieve. Last year, Taylor didn’t have a home. Now, he’s starting 2025 with a place to call his own and the companionship of his beloved dog.

“And that’s why I’m reaching out for help. In 2025, I got a new chance, a new apartment, and I got my dog back. New chances,” he said with a smile.

A short while after leaving the store, Taylor returns with his dog, eager to introduce him. But first, Coco the tug-of-war champion gives her approval, and the two dogs enjoy a few playful moments.

With his dog by his side, Taylor heads home, ready to welcome the new year with hope, gratitude and a fresh perspective. For him, this New Year’s Eve marks the beginning of a second chance, and he couldn’t be more ready to embrace it.
