LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man riding a bicycle in southern Indiana on Sunday afternoon was injured when he was hit by an off-duty officer.

According to a news release from Indiana State Police, an officer from the Salem Police Department was driving a department cruiser westbound on Old State Road 56 around 4 p.m. and was preparing to turn left onto North Canton Road. As the officer began the turn, he failed to see the bicyclist and hit him, ISP said.

The man on the bike was taken by ambulance to Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Salem and later airlifted to UofL Hospital in Louisville. His exact condition is unknown, though ISP said he remains "stable."

Authorities said alcohol and drugs aren't believed to be factors in the crash.

ISP is handling the ongoing investigation.
