LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Interstate 65 South will close overnight Friday, May 8, as crews continue work on the second and final phase of a project to replace expansion joints on the Kennedy Bridge.
I-65 South on the bridge will close starting at Exit 1 to U.S. 31 South/Stansifer Avenue/10th Street in Jeffersonville, Indiana, from 8 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday, May 9.
During the closure, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said drivers should detour using Interstate 265 West to Interstate 64 East to reconnect with I-65 South.
The work is preparation for a planned full closure of about 5 miles of I-65 this summer, scheduled from June 1 through Aug. 1.
The Kennedy Bridge closures allow crews to continue work in the left three lanes of the span, which began in February after earlier work was completed on the right lanes.
The joint replacement project is part of a $6.9 million effort to improve the bridge. It is expected to be completed by this fall, with intermittent lane closures expected throughout construction.
Expansion joints are components of the bridge deck that allow for movement caused by temperature changes, helping prevent cracking and preserving structural integrity, KYTC said.
