LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentuckiana residents are experiencing some pain at the pump as gas prices shoot up going into the holiday weekend.

Some stations in Louisville are charging nearly $4.40 per gallon. AAA points to increased demand ahead of Memorial Day on Monday.

The agency predicts nearly 44 million people will be traveling over the weekend, and 38.5 million of those travelers will drive. That's the highest number since AAA started tracking this back in 2000.

Louisville's average gas price as of Thursday is about $3.70 per gallon, which is about .25 cents more than this time last year.

While the spike was caused by Memorial Day weekend travel demand, it's not clear if drivers will see any relief soon as the busy summer travel season continues to ramp up.

"It's impossible to predict with certainty, but the trend is moving upward for gas prices and, as you mentioned, we're heading into the busy summer travel season. That pushes demand up and that pushes prices up," said Lynda Lambert, spokesperson for AAA East Central.

To help you find the cheapest local spot to fill up your tank, GasBuddy's website has an interactive map that lets you see the price at many gas stations across Kentuckiana. On Wednesday, it shows the cheapest gas in Metro Louisville is at a few stations in Fern Creek. But it's important to remember that gas prices are always in flux.

Earlier this week, President Joe Biden's administration said it would release a million barrels of gasoline from a Northeast reserve that was established after Superstorm Sandy in an effort to lower prices at the pump this summer, The Associated Press reported.Ā
