LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A fruit native to Kentucky is growing in popularity and now has its own festival.

The Pawpaw Festival was held at Louisville Nature Center on Saturday. The fruit's taste is compared to bananas, mangos and pineapples.

Some people tried it for the first time on Saturday.

"I think a lot of people are surprised how good it is," said Kirk Pomper, Kentucky State University professor of Horticulture. "They had no idea that there was tropical-flavored fruit growing in Kentucky. I think that's kind of the first opportunity to see that."

Pawpaw is also used in some wines and brandies. It is a greenish blackish fruit that is usually three to six inches long.
