LG&E FALCON CAM

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Falcons have returned to the Louisville area in time for Valentine's Day.

Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company has a live camera at its Mill Creek Generating Station that shows a peregrine falcon's nesting box.

Diana, a peregrine falcon, recently returned to the nesting box. Her longtime mate, Perry, is also in sight.

"The nesting boxes at our generating stations provide peregrine falcons a perfect location in which to raise their families and thrive in a safe environment," Cody Gibbons, an environmental coordinator with LG&E and KU, said in a news release. "Our falcon cam is not only entertaining for birdwatchers, but it provides educational opportunities to students in classrooms around the world."

The live camera is part of a partnership between LG&E/KU and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife to grow the peregrine falcon population since 1990s.

"Peregrine falcons, which were once an endangered species, have made a remarkable comeback in Kentucky. From the 1930s until 1997, there were no nesting pairs of peregrine falcons in the state," Michael Patton, KDFWR avian biologist, said in a news release.

"With the support of committed partners like LG&E and KU, the peregrine falcon population has continued to increase. We now have 19 known pairs of peregrine falcons in Kentucky, and many are using nest boxes at LG&E and KU generating stations," he said.

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources has placed nest boxes at many locations throughout Kentucky, including locations at LG&E and KU's Trimble County, Mill Creek, Ghent and E.W. Brown generating stations.

According to a news release, a total of eight peregrine flacon chicks successfully flew the coop at the nesting box. Viewers can expect to see their first glimpse of eggs in March and the chicks hatch around mid-April or early May.
